This is Custom.

Thought I’d post some pictures of the latest Arete Ti to roll out the door. This frame is a little different for us, because the client had very specific wants and desires -

“No tube ovalisation at all.” *eek!*

“No machined headtube.”

“Monostay Seatstays.” *eek!*

“29er.”

Whew. Okay so compared to the EWR this one is a relative cakewalk, but the good thing about specific, non “what we normally do” requests it is that it keeps you on your toes and keeps your spidey senses tingling.

    Might I ask what the purpose is of the join line across the seat tube? I’m sure there’s a good reason for it (or that it isn’t even a join, but just looks like one perhaps?

    In these pictures it’s hard to tell it’s a 29er.

    Hey Tim,
    That’s the deal with 29ers for us big lads - they actually look normal, as opposed to 26ers which just look, well, silly. It’s also why conversely 29ers for those too small for them look like clown bikes. ;)
    The join across the seat tube on the Ti bikes is a separate part that’s welded in. It’s a precision machined piece that allows for a 30.9 seatpost and a super accurate fit. Because the tubes are straight gauge, there’s no extra thick butted section like there is on our steel bikes, so this does the same thing, adding much needed strength to this highly loaded area.

    What sizing do you consider too small for a 29er, my custom road bikes are 51/53.

    Hard to know. I honestly believe if you can’t get your bars somewhere below your saddle, then you can’t generate any leverage with your arms when climbing out of the saddle, and it makes it more difficult to put weight on the front wheel when climbing.

    Which is fine if you don’t intend to climb much, but if you want a good handling bike that fits, I think it’s imperative that you keep this in mind.

    One thing to keep an eye out for though if you can’t really fit on a 29er is look out for a new wheelsize that is inbetween 26″ and 29″ - 650b. It could possibly solve a lot of issues for what some of the benefits of 29″ wheels but would like to minimise the downsides.
